Crop While Maintaining Original Ratio

Here is an easy way in any version of Photoshop to crop an image and maintain its native proportion. This is useful when cropping an image and still want to maintain the proper print size ratio (i.e. 5″ x 7″).

First of make sure the Crop panel is clear of any previous settings. If not, just click the Clear button.

Use the Crop tool (keyboard shortcut: C) to select the whole image. Then drag one of the corner point from the top left to the bottom right of the image.
Hold the SHIFT key and drag the corner points towards the center of the image.

You can move the crop selection anywhere you wish. But if you need to crop it further, you must hold the SHIFT key to maintain the ratio. If you are satisfied with the crop, hit the ENTER key on your keyboard.
